About the Role

As a Safety Inspector, you will play a key role in keeping taxi, bus, and marine services safe for everyone. Reporting to the Team Leader, you will work closely with operators and industry stakeholders to promote safety, ensure compliance, and support best practice.

What you'll do:

  • Check safety standards and help operators meet their obligations.
  • Identify risks and non-compliance, working with industry to improve safety.
  • Support safety programs that make a real difference.
  • Provide clear guidance, reports, and recommendations to improve compliance.
  • Work with industry partners and regulators to strengthen safety across transport services.
  • Encourage continuous improvement and a strong safety culture.

This role is about engaging with the industry, building trust, and supporting voluntary compliance while ensuring safe and reliable transport for all.

We are looking for someone who enjoys teaching and guiding others, solving problems, and working as part of a team. You'll be a great communicator who can engage with different people, explain safety requirements clearly, and support industries in meeting their obligations. Your ability to think critically and find practical solutions will help improve safety outcomes. A strong understanding of diversity and inclusion principles, along with excellent interpersonal skills, will enable you to build trust and work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. You take responsibility for your work, collaborate well with others, and are always looking for ways to improve safety and compliance.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Experience collaborating with colleagues, customers, or external stakeholders. Clearly explains complex information to different audiences. Builds positive relationships to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Assesses situations, identifies risks or challenges, and takes appropriate action. Demonstrates sound judgement in resolving workplace or operational issues.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • A valid driver's licence (regular travel required).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risks and make sound decisions.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Desirable:

  • Certificate IV in Government Investigations or equivalent qualification.
  • Marine licence with PWC endorsement (preferred for those working in maritime safety).
  • Experience working with compliance agencies or within a safety inspectorate environment.
