Position Description - Light Vehicle Mechanic

The Motor Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, servicing, repairing and testing light motor vehicles and their mechanical components. The role ensures vehicles are maintained to manufacturer specifications, workplace safety standards and relevant roadworthiness requirements.

Main Tasks

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults in petrol, diesel, hybrid and light motor vehicles using diagnostic equipment, testing tools and service manuals.
  • Carry out scheduled servicing, including oil changes, lubrication, fluid replacement, filter replacement, engine tune-ups and general maintenance.
  • Inspect, dismantle, repair and reassemble engines, transmissions, steering systems, suspension, brake systems, cooling systems and other vehicle components.
  • Replace worn, damaged or defective parts, including belts, hoses, bearings, seals, gaskets, brake components and suspension parts.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections and identify repairs required to maintain safety, reliability and roadworthiness.
  • Test and adjust repaired mechanical components to ensure correct operation and performance.
  • Use computerised diagnostic scanners and workshop equipment to identify faults and clear fault codes after repairs.
  • Complete repair orders, inspection reports and service records accurately.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised workshop environment.
  • Assist with customer enquiries by explaining identified faults, recommended repairs and maintenance requirements where required.
  • Attend vehicle breakdowns or roadside assistance jobs where required by the business.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all work efficiently, safely and to a high standard of workmanship.
  • Follow manufacturer specifications, workshop procedures and workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Ensure all tools, equipment and diagnostic devices are used correctly and maintained in good working order.
  • Identify additional faults or safety concerns and report these promptly to the Workshop Manager or Service Advisor.
  • Ensure repairs are completed within allocated timeframes without compromising quality or safety.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed, parts used and recommendations made.
  • Work collaboratively with other mechanics, apprentices, service advisors and workshop staff.
  • Keep up to date with developments in automotive technology, diagnostic systems and repair procedures.
  • Comply with all relevant environmental, safety and waste-disposal requirements.

Qualifications

  • Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, Automotive Mechanical Technology, or a closely related trade qualification.
  • Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis or a related qualification is highly regarded.
  • A current driver licence is required.
  • Relevant trade licence, registration or roadworthy certification authority may be required depending on the duties and State or Territory requirements.

Experience

  • Minimum one to two years of relevant full-time automotive mechanical experience following completion of trade training, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience servicing, maintaining, diagnosing and repairing light motor vehicles.
  • Experience using diagnostic scanners, workshop equipment and manufacturer service information.
  • Experience working with engines, braking systems, steering, suspension, transmissions and automotive electrical systems.
  • Experience in a busy workshop environment is highly regarded.

Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and fault-finding ability.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical and electronic vehicle faults.
  • Competence using diagnostic scanners, hand tools, power tools and workshop equipment.
  • Knowledge of vehicle servicing procedures and manufacturer specifications.
  • Sound understanding of brakes, steering, suspension, engine systems and drivetrain components.
  • Good attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a workshop team.
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills.
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues clearly.
  • Commitment to workplace health and safety, safe manual handling and environmental compliance.
  • Ability to read and follow technical manuals, job cards and repair instructions.

Drug and Alcohol Testing

The successful candidate will be required to complete a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. 

Ongoing employment is subject to compliance with the Company’s Drug and Alcohol Policy, including random, 

for-cause and post-incident testing where required.
