The Motor Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, servicing, and repairing mechanical, electrical and electronic systems within light motor vehicles.

The role involves carrying out scheduled maintenance, fault diagnosis, engine repairs, and component replacement across a wide range of vehicle makes and models in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

Task & responsibilities

Duties:

  • Perform vehicle diagnostics using multi-brand scan tools and electronic diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical, electrical and electronic system faults
  • Interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), live data streams, and technical system information to determine root causes of vehicle issues
  • Carry out engine repairs including timing systems, cylinder head repairs, gasket replacement, valve train servicing, and related mechanical components
  • Diagnose and repair diesel and petrol fuel systems including common rail injection, turbocharging systems, EGR systems, and emissions control systems (DPF)
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair braking, steering, suspension, and driveline systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications
  • Perform scheduled logbook servicing, vehicle testing, and NSW e-Safety (Pink Slip) inspections to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with Australian standards
  • Maintain accurate documentation of diagnostics, repairs, labour, parts used, and services performed in workshop systems

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all mechanical servicing and repair work is completed accurately, safely, and in a timely manner in accordance with workshop procedures and manufacturer specifications
  • Ensure all repair and diagnostic work is completed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workshop procedures
  • Comply with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements, including safe use of tools, equipment, vehicles, and handling of hazardous materials
  • Communicate effectively with workshop supervisors and service advisors regarding vehicle faults, repair requirements, and job progress
  • Identify and report additional vehicle defects or safety concerns discovered during inspection, servicing, or repairs
  • Maintain cleanliness, organisation, and proper care of workshop tools, diagnostic equipment, and work areas while supporting efficient workshop operations
  • Ensure electrical diagnostics and repairs are limited to vehicle systems within Motor Mechanic scope

Qualification & experience

  • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (or equivalent qualification)
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant post-qualification experience as a Motor Mechanic or Automotive Technician
  • Experience in vehicle servicing, diagnostics, and repairs in a workshop environment
  • Strong experience using modern diagnostic scan tools and interpreting vehicle system live data
  • Strong mechanical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills
  • Good understanding of petrol and diesel engine systems, fuel systems, and emissions systems
  • Ability to diagnose and repair braking, steering, suspension, and electrical systems
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy workshop environment
  • Good communication and professional workshop conduct
