Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examine vehicle surfaces to identify repair and refinishing requirements. 
  • Remove rust, dents, or old paint using sanding, grinding, or chemical stripping methods. Removing rough spots on vehicle panels. Sanding surfaces by hand and with power sanders
  • Clean, mask, and prime surfaces to ensure proper paint adhesion.  Masking areas not to be painted with tape and paper
  • Colour matching and mixing paints to match paint shades, and selecting pre-mixed paint. Mix and match paint colors using computerized color-matching systems to achieve precise color accuracy. 
  • Maintain accurate records of paint formulas and quantities used. 
  • Apply primer, base coat, and topcoat using spray guns and other painting equipment. Ensure uniform paint application and high-quality finishes in line with manufacturer or client specifications. Removing masking papers, and waxing and polishing finished paintwork. 
  • Maintain correct thickness and curing times as specified by paint manufacturer guidelines. 
  • Polish and buff painted surfaces to remove imperfections and achieve a smooth, glossy finish.  Touching up paintwork and applying polish to vehicles
  • Painting signs and artwork on vehicles
  • Treating vehicles with rust-proofing chemicals
  • Conduct final inspection to ensure paint quality meets required standards. 
  • Clean and maintain spray guns, paint booths, and related tools after each use. 
  • Ensure proper ventilation and adherence to workplace health and safety regulations. 
  • Report any faulty equipment or safety hazards to the supervisor immediately. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times. Provide progress updates and completion reports to the supervisor. 
  • Follow company quality control procedures and automotive refinishing best practices.
  • Comply with Australian occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental protection standards. 
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by workplace policy. 
  • Work collaboratively with panel beaters, mechanics, and other workshop staff to coordinate repair timelines. 

Required Skills and Experience

  • Qualifications: AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of relevant post-qualification work experience in vehicle painting
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in interpreting paint manufacturer technical data sheets and color formulas.
  • English: Must have a high level of English proficiency to follow safety protocols and technical instructions.
