Dismantling and removing engine assemblies, transmissions, steering systems and related components, followed by detailed inspection of parts

Repairing or replacing worn, damaged or faulty components; reassembling mechanical systems; and consulting service manuals where required

Carrying out scheduled maintenance tasks—including oil changes, lubrication services and engine tune‑ups—to improve vehicle performance and meet emissions standards

Testing, calibrating and adjusting mechanical systems to ensure correct operation after repairs

Using computer-based diagnostic equipment to test and analyse vehicle components

Task & responsibilities

A motor mechanic is responsible for detecting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults, dismantling and inspecting engines, transmissions, and steering systems, and repairing or replacing worn or defective components. They perform scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrication, and engine tune‑ups to improve vehicle performance and meet emissions standards. After repairs, they reassemble engines and mechanical systems, test and adjust parts for correct operation, and use computer-based diagnostic tools to analyze faults. They may also inspect vehicles for roadworthiness or advise on required repairs and respond to breakdown service calls when on‑site assistance is needed.
