Task & responsibilities

  • Conducting thorough inspections to detect and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in vehicle engines and associated components using diagnostic tools and technical manuals. 
  • Dismantling engine assemblies, transmissions, steering systems, and other vehicle components to assess wear and damage, and removing parts where necessary. 
  • Repairing or replacing defective, worn, or malfunctioning mechanical components, ensuring compatibility and adherence to manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform comprehensive engine rebuilding, including disassembly, inspection, replacement of worn components, and reassembly in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Conduct ECU (Engine Control Unit) programming and diagnostics using specialized software and tools to optimize engine performance and ensure compliance with emission standards.
  • Diagnose and repair transmission systems, including automatic and manual gearboxes, by identifying faults, replacing or repairing defective components, and performing reinstallation and testing.
  • Referring to technical drawings and service manuals to guide repair and reassembly processes accurately.
  • Performing routine maintenance and servicing of vehicles, including oil changes, lubrication, engine tune-ups, and filter replacements to ensure optimal vehicle performance and compliance with environmental and safety standards.
  • Reassembling mechanical components and engines following repairs, ensuring all parts are correctly installed and operational.
  • Testing, adjusting, and calibrating repaired mechanical systems using specialized tools and diagnostic equipment to verify that performance meets manufacturer specifications.
  • Utilizing computerized diagnostic systems to test and analyse vehicle systems and components for efficient troubleshooting and repair.
  • Inspecting vehicles to assess roadworthiness and, where authorized, issuing certificates of compliance or detailing repairs required to meet roadworthy standards.
  • Responding to roadside breakdowns by assessing faults, conducting on-the-spot repairs where possible, and arranging towing or further service if required.

Qualification & experience

  • AQF Certificate III or an equivalent or higher relevant qualification is preferred.
  • A minimum of 12 months of full-time / part-time and Casual employment or equivalent experience as a motor mechanic.
  • Proven experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining motor vehicles, including engine systems, transmissions, braking, and suspension.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, technical manuals, and service equipment.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle systems and components, including mechanical and basic electrical.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced workshop environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety standards.
  • A valid Australian driver’s licence is preferable.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and staying updated with evolving automotive technologies.
