Task & responsibilities

About the role

We are seeking a skilled, reliable, and motivated Diesel Motor Mechanic to join our workshop on a full-time, ongoing basis. Working under the direction of the workshop supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting, servicing, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles and mechanical systems to a high standard. The role involves identifying mechanical faults, carrying out scheduled maintenance and repairs, and ensuring all work is completed safely and in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workshop requirements

Key duties and responsibilities

•    Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in diesel engines and their associated systems — including fuel injection, turbocharging, cooling and emission-control systems — across vehicles, trucks and mobile plant, using workshop diagnostic tools and computerised testing equipment.

•    Carry out mechanical condition assessments of diesel-powered vehicles, trucks and machinery received by the business, evaluating their mechanical state prior to dismantling, component recovery or recycling.

•    Dismantle diesel vehicles and plant and recover serviceable mechanical assemblies, including diesel engines, fuel-injection pumps and injectors, turbochargers, gearboxes and transmissions, differentials, radiators, alternators, starter motors, and steering and suspension components.

•    Test and evaluate recovered diesel components to determine their suitability for refurbishment, resale, re-use or recycling.

•    Repair, recondition and service reusable diesel engine assemblies and related mechanical components where commercially and technically viable.

•    Drain, contain and dispose of diesel fuel, engine oils, coolant, hydraulic fluid and other automotive fluids in accordance with environmental protection and workplace safety requirements.

•    Perform scheduled servicing, maintenance and repairs on the company's diesel fleet and operational plant, including tow trucks, prime movers, forklifts, excavators, loaders and materials-handling equipment used throughout the recycling yard.

•    Reassemble and adjust repaired diesel components and verify correct operation through appropriate testing before the component is returned to service or offered for sale.

•    Refer to manufacturer service manuals, technical specifications and repair data to guide accurate diagnosis and repair work.

•    Maintain diagnostic instruments, hand and power tools, and workshop equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.

•    Record recovered diesel components and mechanical parts and support the accurate management of the parts inventory.

•    Perform all tasks in accordance with the company's Work Health and Safety (WHS) obligations, safe operating procedures and relevant industry standards.

Qualification & experience

Skills and experience required

•    AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3).

•    At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above.

•    Experience in diesel engine servicing, repairs, and fault diagnosis.

•    Knowledge of engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and cooling systems.

•    Ability to dismantle, repair, replace, and reassemble mechanical components.

•    Competent in using diagnostic scanners and workshop tools.

•    Understanding of manufacturer specifications and safe work practices.

•    Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
