Task & Responsibilities

Main Duties:

  • Core responsibilities: Diagnose, repair and maintain mechanical and electrical components of motorcycles, including engines, transmission, braking and suspension systems following industry best practices and standards.
  • Diagnostic skills: Use diagnostic procedures and computer-assisted tools to identify faults in engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, suspension and steering components, etc.
  • Maintenance tasks: Perform routine general service scope, i.e. oil changes, chain service, electrical system testing, brake systems & tyre service.
  • Components handling: Dismantle, inspect, repair or replace defective parts, the reassemble and test for proper function, referencing authorized service manuals where required.
  • Additional duties. Conducting safety inspections to ensure motorcycles meet regulatory standards. Maintain overall cleanliness and presentation of working environment and tools.
  • Health and safety: following the occupational health and safety, in conjunction with industry and workshop standards. Complying with employment requirements and work in accordance to manager’s instructions.

Key Responsibilities: 

A Motorcycle Mechanic is responsible for the workshop upkeep, and diagnostics, testing, repair and servicing of motorcycle systems on a case-by-case scenarios. Some critical responsibilities would be as follows:

  • Maintenance & repair: Performing a wide range of maintenance tasks (i.e. oil changes, brake system servicing, tyres fitting & balancing, chain & sprockets fitting, various fluids changes, etc.), as well as, more complex repairs (i.e. engine overhauls, electrical fault diagnosis and repairs, valve clearances inspections & adjustments, etc.) on motorcycles. 
  • Diagnostic & assessment: Use diagnostic procedures and computer-assisted tools to identify faults in engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, suspension and steering components, etc.
  • Inspections: Conducting thorough safety inspections to ensure motorcycles meet regulatory standards as set out by Transport for NSW regulations.
  • Technical manuals interpretation: Interpreting and utilizing technical documentation such as plans, diagrams, schematics, and manuals to guide work.
  • Components Handling: Dismantle, inspect, repair, or replace defective parts, then reassemble and test for proper function, integrity, often referencing service manuals.
  • Customization: Modifying motorcycles according to customer preferences, including installing aftermarket parts and performance upgrades, to the scope and degree to retain roadworthiness of the motorcycle
  • Tool Proficiency: Competently and safely using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialized machine tools (motorcycle stands & jacks, tyre changers, wheel balancers, software diagnostics equipment) relevant to motorcycle mechanics.
  • Continuous Learning: Staying up-to-date with the latest technologies, repair techniques, and industry advancements in the ever-evolving motorcycle field.

Compliance & Safety:

  • Safety Practices: Adhering to all occupational health and safety regulations and workshop procedures. Proper use of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Environmental Responsibility: Complying with environmental regulations related to workshop operations.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Maintaining a working knowledge of relevant Australian Standards, legislation, and regulations that apply to motor mechanics.

Customer Service & Communication:

  • Customer Interaction: Providing the expected level of customer service and workmanship quality, including understanding customer needs and explaining repairs or maintenance work clearly.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrating expected oral communication skills to effectively and productively interact with customers and colleagues.
  • Professional Presentation: Maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor, including appropriate grooming, presentation and professional behaviour.


Qualification & Experience

Essential Skills Criteria:

  • A minimum a Certificate III in Motorcycle Mechanical Technology or Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent qualification
  • A relevant tradesperson certificate
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience is required
  • At least 3 years work experience in the absence of the formal qualification
  • Able to study plans, diagrams, schematic, and manuals to complete the required work
  • Able to own and use workshop tools, power tools (such as pneumatic air guns and ratchets), machine tools (motorcycle lifts, tyre changing equipment, wheel balancers).
  • Staying updated with the latest technologies and repair techniques is essential in the evolving motorcycle industry
  • Understands the importance of and able to use the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Knowledge of Australian Standards, legislation and regulations that apply to Motor Mechanics
  • Must be able to present and adhere to expected customer service
  • Proficient in oral communication skills;
  • Must have good grooming, overall presentation and self-hygiene
  • Available on the weekends
