An established business in South Australia is seeking for a Diesel Motor Mechanic/ Light Vehicle Mechanic and Truck Driver to join its team on a full-time permanent basis!

Position Overview:

Diesel Motor Mechanic

The Diesel Motor Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of diesel engines and related mechanical components across our fleet of tow trucks, recovery vehicles and other heavy vehicles. This role directly supports our 24-hour towing and roadside assistance service to customers across South Australia.

Light Vehicle Mechanic

The Light Vehicle Mechanic  is responsible for servicing, safety-checking and repairing our light passenger and light commercial support fleet (utes, vans and light tow vehicles) and assisting with customer vehicle work referred through our towing and recovery operations. The role is largely bay-based workshop work, with occasional support to the on-road team as required.

Truck Driver

The Truck Driver is responsible for the safe driving, loading, securing and transport of vehicles, goods, equipment and materials using our fleet of trucks, tow trucks and recovery vehicles. This role supports our broader transport, towing and roadside assistance operations across South Australia, with duties assigned according to business need across our vehicle fleet.

Task & responsibilities

DIESEL MOTOR MECHANIC

  • Detecting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults in diesel engines and related components, including with computer-assisted diagnostic equipment
  • Dismantling and removing engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms, and hydraulic winch and towing equipment for inspection and repair
  • Repairing and replacing worn or defective parts and reassembling mechanical components to manufacturer specifications
  • Performing scheduled preventative maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, engine tune-ups, and brake and suspension servicing
  • Reassembling, testing and adjusting parts and systems following repair to confirm correct performance
  • Inspecting fleet vehicles and identifying work required to achieve and maintain roadworthiness
  • Responding to mechanical breakdowns affecting the operational fleet, including in the field, to minimise vehicle downtime
  • Maintaining accurate service and repair records for each vehicle
  • Liaising with the workshop/fleet manager on parts ordering and servicing priorities
  • Participating in an on-call/after-hours roster supporting our 24-hour operation

LIGHT VEHICLE MECHANIC

  • Servicing and repairing petrol-powered light passenger and light commercial vehicles in the workshop, including utes, vans and light tow vehicles. 
  • Detecting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults using computer-assisted diagnostic equipment. 
  • Carrying out routine and scheduled servicing, including oil and filter changes, tune-ups, and brake, steering and suspension work. 
  • Removing, inspecting, repairing and refitting transmissions, clutches, steering and suspension components. 
  • Conducting roadworthiness and safety inspections on light vehicles and issuing service reports. 
  • Ordering parts and maintaining the workshop's spare parts and consumables stock in liaison with the workshop/fleet manager. 
  • Maintaining accurate digital service and repair records for each vehicle worked on. 
  • Keeping the workshop bay, tools and equipment clean, organised and safe to use. 
  • Providing occasional light-vehicle mechanical support to the on-road recovery team during high-demand periods. 

TRUCK DRIVER

  • Driving rigid and/or articulated trucks, including tow trucks and recovery vehicles, to transport goods, vehicles, equipment and materials to specified destinations according to a schedule or dispatch instructions. 
  • Loading and unloading goods, vehicles and equipment, and securing loads in accordance with safe load restraint procedures. 
  • Conducting pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and reporting any mechanical faults to the workshop/fleet manager. 
  • Operating mechanical loading and lifting equipment associated with the vehicle, such as winches, hoists, cranes or hydraulic lifting equipment. 
  • Planning and following the most efficient and safe route for each trip or job, using GPS and dispatch instructions. 
  • Maintaining accurate trip logs, job records, delivery documentation and incident records. 
  • Communicating professionally with customers, other businesses, emergency services and road users encountered in the course of duties. 
  • Complying with fatigue management, work health and safety, and heavy/light vehicle road rules and regulations. 
  • Undertaking driving duties across a rotating or on-call roster, including after hours, according to operational requirements. 
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and basic upkeep of the assigned vehicle. 

Qualification & experience

DIESEL MOTOR MECHANIC

  • AQF Certificate III (or higher) in Automotive, Heavy Vehicle or Diesel Engine Mechanical Technology, or an equivalent recognised trade qualification (at least three years of relevant experience may substitute for formal qualifications)
  • Sound working knowledge of diesel engine systems, transmissions, braking and suspension systems, and associated electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to detect, diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults, including with computer-assisted diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to carry out scheduled preventative maintenance and roadworthiness inspections on heavy vehicles
  • Sound understanding of workplace health and safety practices in workshop and roadside/field repair environments
  • Ability to work effectively under a rotating or on-call roster supporting a 24-hour operation

LIGHT VEHICLE MECHANIC

  • AQF Certificate III (or higher) in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, or an equivalent recognised trade qualification (at least three years of relevant experience may substitute for formal qualifications). 
  • Sound working knowledge of petrol engine systems, transmissions, braking, steering and suspension systems in light vehicles. 
  • Competence using computer-assisted diagnostic scan tools for light vehicles. 
  • Ability to carry out roadworthiness inspections and complete service documentation accurately. 
  • Sound understanding of workshop work health and safety practices. 
  • Ability to work well independently in a small workshop team, with reliable full-time attendance. 

TRUCK DRIVER

  • Current Australian heavy/light vehicle driver's licence appropriate to the class of vehicle operated (or eligibility to obtain one). 
  • Relevant experience operating trucks or other heavy/light commercial vehicles (at least three years of relevant experience preferred). 
  • Sound working knowledge of vehicle loading, load restraint and safe transport procedures. 
  • Ability to operate winches, hoists, cranes or other hydraulic lifting equipment safely, where required for the role. 
  • Sound understanding of workplace health and safety practices in on-road and field environments. 
  • Ability to work effectively under a rotating or on-call roster according to operational requirements. 
  • Good communication skills and a customer-focused approach.
