Task & responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose and identify mechanical and electrical faults in petrol engines and vehicle components using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
• Service, maintain and repair lightweight motor vehicles in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workshop procedures.
• Dismantle and remove engines, transmissions, steering systems, suspension components, braking systems and other mechanical assemblies.
• Examine vehicle components to identify wear, damage, defects or potential safety concerns.
• Repair or replace worn and defective parts and reassemble mechanical components using relevant service manuals and technical specifications.
• Perform scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, engine tune-ups and safety inspections.
• Test, adjust and calibrate repaired mechanical components to ensure proper operation, safety and performance.
• Use computerised diagnostic equipment to test engines, electronic systems and related vehicle components.
• Inspect pre-owned vehicles and identify repairs or maintenance required to ensure they meet the business’s quality and road-readiness standards.
• Conduct road tests and final quality checks to confirm that repairs and servicing have been completed correctly.
• Document inspections, diagnostic findings, repairs performed, parts used and further work required.
• Maintain workshop tools, equipment and work areas in a safe, clean and serviceable condition.
• Follow workplace health and safety requirements, environmental regulations and applicable automotive industry standards.
• Inspect vehicles for roadworthiness and provide details of any work required to achieve roadworthy condition, where authorised.

Qualification & experience

• A relevant AQF Certificate III, or IV in Automotive Mechanical Technology or a closely related field.
• A minimum of one year of relevant work experience as a Motor Mechanic.
• Strong knowledge of vehicle servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis and mechanical repair procedures.
• Experience working with engines, transmissions, braking, steering, suspension and electrical systems.
• Ability to use computerised diagnostic equipment, workshop tools and technical service manuals.
• Strong fault-finding, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a workshop team.
• Strong understanding of workplace health and safety requirements and automotive industry standards.
• A current Australian driver’s licence.
