The Diesel Motor Mechanic will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining heavy diesel-powered vehicles, trailers, and associated mechanical systems to ensure maximum fleet reliability, safety, and operational efficiency. The successful candidate will carry out preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repairs while ensuring all work complies with manufacturer specifications, Australian Standards, and workplace health and safety requirements.

Task & responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, service, repair, and maintain diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering, suspension, and driveline components.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on heavy vehicles and trailers.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic faults using specialised diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair or replace defective components, parts, and assemblies.
  • Conduct engine tuning and performance testing to ensure optimal vehicle operation.
  • Perform servicing in accordance with manufacturer specifications and maintenance schedules.
  • Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with roadworthiness, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Complete work orders, maintenance reports, service records, and parts documentation accurately.
  • Maintain workshop equipment, tools, and work areas in a safe and clean condition.
  • Assist with breakdown repairs and emergency maintenance when required.
  • Liaise with workshop supervisors regarding repair priorities and maintenance scheduling.
  • Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety (WHS) policies and environmental procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance efficiency and minimise vehicle downtime.
  • Support apprentices and junior mechanics where required.

Qualification & experience

  • AQF Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, Automotive Diesel Engine Technology, or an equivalent recognised trade qualification.
  • Minimum three year of relevant full-time experience as a Diesel Motor Mechanic working on heavy commercial vehicles.
  • Demonstrated experience servicing and repairing diesel engines, heavy trucks, trailers, and associated mechanical systems.
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills using modern diagnostic equipment.
  • Sound knowledge of diesel fuel systems, braking systems, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to interpret workshop manuals, technical drawings, and service documentation.
  • Strong commitment to workplace health and safety and quality workmanship.
  • Good communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
