The Role

As a Grounds Person – Horticulturist, you will report to the Grounds Team Leader and be responsible for maintaining the College’s grounds and gardens to a high standard, while providing a range of services that support College operations and events in line with all health and safety requirements.

This is an ongoing, full-time role, as a key member of the team working across the 19-hectare campus situated on Gabbiljee (Bull Creek).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain garden beds, lawns, and landscaped areas to a high standard, including mowing, pruning, mulching, spraying, and general clean‑up using the designated using designated equipment, chemicals and horticultural supplies.

  • Assist with routine and emergency reticulation maintenance, including minor repairs.

  • Support the preparation of sporting fields, including line marking and installing sports goals.

  • Contribute to the establishment, upgrade, and maintenance of hard and soft landscaping across the campus.

  • Carry out routine checks and maintenance of machinery, play equipment, sports goals, surfaces, and fences, addressing hazards immediately and reporting issues—especially those relating to safety—to the Grounds Team Leader or Grounds and Maintenance Manager.

About You

You will bring either a recognised horticultural qualification or extensive hands‑on experience in grounds and garden maintenance. You’re someone who thrives in a busy, dynamic environment and takes pride in high‑quality work. Personable and service‑focused, you build strong working relationships across the College community and with external contractors. You’re confident working independently, able to prioritise competing demands, and comfortable adapting to the fast pace of a school setting.

Committed to delivering work of a high standard, you can also demonstrate:

  • Prioritization of safety in all aspects of work, including proper use of tools and equipment, adherence to safety protocols, and awareness of potential hazards for students and staff.

  • Able to adapt to changing weather conditions, seasonal variations, and evolving needs of the school.

  • A strong understanding of plant care, including planting, pruning, watering, fertilizing, and pest management is essential.

  • Ability to design and maintain attractive outdoor spaces, including knowledge of landscape design principles, hardscape installation, and irrigation systems.

  • Proven experience in troubleshooting problems and implement appropriate solutions.
