This role involves diagnosing, servicing, maintaining, and repairing heavy vehicle diesel engines and associated mechanical and electrical systems, including transmissions, steering, suspension, and braking systems, to ensure vehicles operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Australian standards. The successful candidate will carry out scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, dismantle and reassemble components, conduct roadworthiness inspections, complete post-repair testing, and maintain accurate service records while adhering to manufacturer specifications, industry best practices, and Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) requirements within a professional workshop environment.

Task & responsibilities

  • Diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults in heavy vehicle diesel engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, and braking systems using manual techniques and diagnostic software and tools
  • Performing scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance, and breakdown repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications and industry standards
  • Dismantling, inspecting, repairing, and reassembling engines, transmissions, driveline systems, and other major components
  • Removing and replacing worn, damaged, or defective parts to ensure safe and reliable vehicle operation
  • Conducting roadworthiness inspections and identifying work required to meet safety and transport compliance requirements
  • Carrying out post-repair testing, adjustments, and quality checks to ensure optimal vehicle performance
  • Maintaining accurate service records, defect reports, and parts usage documentation
  • Working collaboratively with the workshop team, assisting apprentices where required, and reporting progress and issues to the Workshop Manager
  • Communicating professionally with customers regarding vehicle conditions, required repairs, timeframes, and cost estimates
  • Strictly following WHS procedures and ensuring safe work practices at all times
  • Ensuring compliance with environmental, transport, and mechanical safety regulations

Qualification & experience

  • Certificate III or Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Technology, Heavy Vehicle Mechanical Technology, or a closely related trade qualification, or equivalent proven industry experience
  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience working as a heavy vehicle or diesel mechanic in a workshop or similar environment
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose, fault-find, and repair complex mechanical and electrical systems in heavy vehicles
  • Strong technical knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, braking, steering, and suspension systems
  • Current valid driver’s licence, with a heavy vehicle licence considered an advantage
  • Ability to work independently, manage workloads efficiently, and maintain high standards of workmanship and safety
