The Diesel Motor Mechanic will inspect, test, diagnose, repair and maintain diesel engines and mechanical components of trucks, buses, heavy vehicles and lightweight diesel vehicles. The role involves identifying faults, carrying out repairs and replacements, performing servicing and ensuring vehicles operate safely and efficiently.

Task & responsibilities

• Inspect diesel engines and mechanical components to identify faults and determine required repairs.
• Test and diagnose engine and mechanical system faults using electronic diagnostic equipment and accurately interpret diagnostic results.
• Maintain, test and repair diesel engines in trucks, buses, heavy vehicles and lightweight diesel-powered vehicles.
• Inspect and service mechanical systems including transmissions, suspension, steering and braking systems.
• Dismantle and remove engines, transmissions, steering systems and other mechanical components for inspection and repair.
• Examine dismantled components to identify worn, damaged or defective parts.
• Repair or replace faulty and worn components using appropriate methods such as welding, bolting, riveting and soldering.
• Reassemble engine and mechanical components and install repaired engines into vehicles.
• Adjust and repair electrical and mechanical systems, including fuel injection, ignition, cooling and lubrication systems.
• Conduct post-repair testing and make necessary adjustments to ensure mechanical systems operate correctly.
• Carry out routine vehicle servicing, including oil changes, battery checks, lubrication and general maintenance.
• Perform preventative maintenance to minimise breakdowns and maintain vehicle reliability.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, servicing and maintenance work completed.
• Follow workplace health and safety procedures and manufacturer specifications when carrying out repairs and servicing.
• Registration or licensing may be required where applicable.

Qualification & experience

• 1–3 years of relevant experience as a Diesel Motor Mechanic or in a similar mechanical role.
• Relevant qualification must be completed.
• Sound knowledge of diesel engines and vehicle mechanical systems.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
• Experience repairing engines, transmissions, suspension, steering and braking systems.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
