Position Summary
The Motor Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of light vehicles and commercial vehicles. The role requires strong technical skills in mechanical and electrical fault diagnosis, preventative maintenance, engine and drive train repairs, and the use of computerized diagnostic systems. Task & responsibilities
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical faults in petrol, diesel, and commercial vehicle engines and associated systems.
- Conduct comprehensive vehicle inspections to identify defects, worn components, and maintenance requirements.
- Use computerized diagnostic equipment and scan tools to assess engine performance, electrical systems, fuel systems, and vehicle control modules.
- Dismantle and remove engine assemblies, transmissions, steering systems, suspension components, braking systems, and related mechanical parts for inspection and repair.
- Repair, overhaul, replace, and reassemble defective or worn mechanical components in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workshop procedures.
- Carry out engine repairs and replacements, including cylinder head, cooling system, fuel system, clutch, gearbox, and drivetrain repairs.
- Perform scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrications, fluid replacement, tune-ups, and safety inspections.
- Diagnose and repair faults in vehicle electrical systems, including batteries, lighting systems, charging systems, starter motors, sensors, and wiring components.
- Service and repair truck, trailer, and tipper vehicle systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Inspect, repair, and replace braking, steering, and suspension components to maintain vehicle roadworthiness and performance.
- Test repaired vehicles and components to verify correct operation and ensure all repairs meet safety and quality standards.
- Conduct cooling system inspections and repairs, including radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses, and associated components.
- Maintain accurate service records, repair documentation, and parts usage records.
- Communicate repair findings, maintenance requirements, and recommendations to workshop supervisors and customers when required.
- Ensure all work is completed in compliance with workplace health and safety requirements, environmental regulations, and company procedures.
- Assist with roadside breakdown services and emergency repairs when required.
- Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and operational condition.
Qualification & experience
Essential
- Relevant qualification equivalent to Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent trade qualification.
- Demonstrated 1 year of experience as a Motor Mechanic.
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding abilities.
- Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and modern workshop technology.
- Knowledge of vehicle servicing, engine repairs, braking systems, steering systems, suspension systems, transmissions, and electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, technical documentation, and repair procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Current driver's license.
Desirable
- Experience of 1 year working on diesel engines, trucks, trailers, and commercial vehicles.
- Experience with fleet maintenance programs.
- Heavy vehicle mechanical experience.
- Roadworthy inspection experience.
