The Diesel Motor Mechanic will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, testing, servicing, repairing and maintaining diesel-powered heavy vehicles and associated mechanical systems. The successful candidate will perform scheduled and preventative maintenance, identify mechanical faults, repair or replace defective components, and ensure vehicles are maintained to a safe and reliable operational standard.

This is a hands-on, full-time role suited to a qualified tradesperson with strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills and experience working on heavy commercial vehicles and diesel engines.

Task & responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, test and repair diesel engines and mechanical components of heavy vehicles.
  • Detect and diagnose faults in diesel engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, braking and other mechanical systems.
  • Use diagnostic equipment and computer-based systems to identify and assess mechanical faults.
  • Dismantle and remove engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other vehicle components for inspection and repair.
  • Repair or replace worn, damaged or defective parts and reassemble mechanical components in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, engine tune-ups and routine inspections.
  • Reassemble engines and mechanical components following repairs and servicing.
  • Test and adjust repaired mechanical parts and systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Carry out repairs to diesel fuel, cooling, lubrication, braking, steering and suspension systems.
  • Inspect heavy vehicles and identify work required to maintain roadworthiness and safety standards.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and carry out repairs where operationally required.
  • Complete work orders, service records, maintenance reports and parts documentation accurately.
  • Liaise with workshop supervisors and operational staff regarding maintenance priorities and vehicle availability.
  • Maintain tools, workshop equipment and work areas in a safe, clean and organised condition.
  • Follow workplace health and safety, environmental and company procedures at all times.
  • Identify potential maintenance issues and recommend repairs or preventative actions to minimise vehicle downtime.
  • Assist and support apprentices or junior workshop staff where required.

Qualification & experience

  • AQF Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Engine Technology, Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, or another relevant recognised trade qualification, including the appropriate level of practical training; or an AQF Certificate IV in a relevant automotive mechanical field.
  • Minimum one (1) year of relevant full-time experience as a Diesel Motor Mechanic, Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated experience servicing, diagnosing and repairing diesel-powered heavy vehicles.
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills across diesel engines and mechanical systems.
  • Experience working with transmissions, braking systems, steering, suspension and driveline components.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools, workshop equipment and relevant computer-based diagnostic systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, manufacturer specifications and service documentation.
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices and quality workmanship.
  • Good communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work a minimum of 38 ordinary hours per week, with reasonable additional hours as required by operational needs.
