Motor Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing faults, performing repairs, and carrying out routine servicing and maintenance on vehicle systems such as transmissions, steering, brakes, and other mechanical components. Motor mechanic is required to have comprehensive skills and knowledge in all areas of engines and related mechanical parts.

Task & responsibilities

Motor Mechanics undertake a wide range of duties and responsibilities, which include:

  • Inspecting and diagnosing faults in engines and engine components
  • Carrying out scheduled servicing and maintenance tasks
  • Providing advice and reporting potential safety risks in customer vehicles
  • Examining vehicles and conducting diagnostic tests to identify functionality issues
  • Developing action plans for maintenance work and required upgrades
  • Performing both minor and major mechanical repairs
  • Dismantling and reassembling engines to meet factory specifications
  • Repairing and maintaining petrol, diesel engines, and automatic transmissions in light vehicles
  • Testing and adjusting mechanical components after repair to ensure proper performance
  • Replacing worn or defective parts and components as necessary
  • Conducting wheel alignments and post-alignment inspections
  • Performing routine tasks such as tyre changes, brake servicing, and fluid replacement
  • Repairing and maintaining steering and suspension systems
  • Adjusting various vehicle controls and systems
  • Advising customers on maintenance requirements and preventative care procedures
  • Conducting vehicle assessments and advising clients on issues that may prevent their vehicles from passing inspection
  • Maintaining detailed work logs, repair histories, and service records
  • Monitoring stock levels and arranging orders for replacement parts when required
  • Ensuring vehicle serviceability through test drives and performance checks
  • Performing vehicle inspections to issue roadworthy certificates
  • Operating and interpreting diagnostic equipment such as data scanners, labscopes, and exhaust analysers
  • Ensuring compliance with state regulations by testing engines,and safety systems.

Qualification & experience

Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology

Minimum of 1-2 years of experience
